This collection of photographic images celebrates the stunning heritage architecture located within the City of South Perth. The works investigate the history of the city by examining the built environment and the changes in structure design over the years. Combining photography and digital manipulation South Perth is de-constructed and reconfigured. The work is a re-imagining of architectural heritage, giving pause to consider the transformation of the city.
‘The church of St Mary the Virgin is a heritage building and one of Perth’s finest examples of architecture in the art deco idiom. The 1930s Gothic Moderne style in which the church is built is relatively uncommon in Australia. The church is built almost entirely of reinforced concrete and is listed on the Western Australian Register of Heritage Places and on the South Perth (Central) Municipal Heritage Inventory. The church site is near the crest of the ridge of high land in South Perth and has a panoramic outlook to the west over the Swan River estuary. The monument on the church grounds was built in 1970, also of reinforced concrete, comprising a segmented tripod structure supporting a statue representing Christ.’
